Phone scam leaves resident out $5,500

Police are investing a phone scam that has left a Moose Jaw resident out of a significant amount of money.

At 7:33 a.m. on Tuesday, the Moose Jaw Police Service received a complaint of a scam call. Police would learn that the complainant lost $5,500 due to the scam. The circumstances behind the call are still under investigation.

Some of the current scams going around include dealing with the CRA, a family member in need, lotteries, computer antivirus companies and security breaches regarding personal information. Scams tend to target the more vulnerable population including the elderly and new immigrants.

If you receive a scam call, the police recommend you hang up and do not give out any personal information or banking information over the phone.

If you believe you’ve been a victim or you think you’ve been targeted, report the incident to your bank, the Moose Jaw Police Service or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
